The Cool Kids Give

I remember in high school how giving was not really the subject of many conversations (which was…*sigh*…11 years ago). I was even the co-chair of our Student Council community service committee. While we did blanket drives and fundraisers, our service didn’t seem to have the same buzz that giving seems to generate today. Nowadays, it feels totally different.

I just spoke with a member of our 141 Community who’s still in college. She was telling me that giving is more “popular” than ever. Popular? It seems that the cool kids are more active, socially aware, and trying to make a difference. Where was that when I was in high school? First of all, I wasn’t that cool, and I think our committee had only 5 people! Today, my guess is that we would have 50! Remember that Nada Surf song: “I’m the quarterback…I’m popular. I’m the party star…I’m popular”. Now it would be “I’m organizing a community fundraiser to buy clothes for the homeless…I’m popular. I volunteer at the local animal shelter…I’m popular. I wear 141 Eyewear…I’m popular.” …like how I threw that last one in there?

People are starting to realize that doing good is the cool thing to do…or perhaps the “popular” thing to do. Personally, I think people are simply realizing that giving is good. It’s good for your soul, it’s good for others, it’s good for business. Did you ever see Shawshank Redemption? Remember the scene where Andy Dufresne tells Red “hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things, and no good thing ever dies”. *awesome quote by the way* I like to believe that the same thought applies to giving: “giving is a good thing, maybe the best of things, and no good thing ever dies.”

What do you think? Does giving feel like it’s becoming more and more popular? Do you feel like there has been a shift in the way people (of all ages) view giving? Send me an email or leave us a comment. In the meantime, I’m gonna figure out a way to get the Nada Surf guys some pairs of 141’s…

Stay Glassy,
Kyle

Hi Kyle: Sounds like you are doing well. Any ETA on when all that wonderful video of your “learning trip” video to Manzanillo and the eyeglass clinic will be completed? We are really counting on you to come through with a spectacular video to help promote Lionism and our trips for those in the greatest of needs. Wishing the best in everything you do, Sharon Elder
