A Day Without Glasses?

As many of you are aware, Shu-Chu and I are big fans of TOMS shoes. Sooch even went as far as buying a pair!

One of the ways TOMS promotes ‘shoe awareness’ is by asking their consumers to go one day without shoes. Personally, I think it’s a great idea and brilliant marketing. Seems easy, right? So it got me thinking the same thing: “hmmmm…what if we asked everyone to go one day without glasses?”

Well…no way.

Can you imagine? I’m practically a -4.50 in both eyes (i.e. I can hardly see without my glasses). It’d be super difficult for me to function for a day. Think about it. The first thing which pops into my head is that I wouldn’t be able to drive. Well I guess I could, but I’d be putting many lives in danger! I would even have a hard time walking around…especially if I was in an unfamiliar place. I would have a very difficult time at work. In order to read a computer screen I would need to be ~6 inches away from the screen (yes, I just measured that). I’d also have a headache in 20 minutes if I sat that close to the screen! As many of you know, March Madness is going on right now. Despite the fact that my Longhorns were one and done (which was brutal to watch, thank you), I couldn’t watch the tournament even if I wanted to.

It’s easy to take for granted the fact that we have glasses. I admit…I do. We all do. It’s hard not to. But if you wear glasses, just stop, and think about what your life would be like if you needed glasses, but either could not afford them or you did not have access to vision care. What would you do? How would your life be different?

For me, I’d miss being able to surf the internet. Facebook / Gmail / espn.com? Ha! Good luck! In addition, I’d miss being able to see Shu-Chu clearly from more than 12 inches away. I’d miss driving my car and having the freedom to get around safely. I could make this list go on forever.

Don’t worry, we will not ask anyone to go one day without their glasses. If you want to promote awareness for folks who need eyewear but cannot afford it, just ask someone who wears glasses one simple question and let them answer: how would your life be different if you could not afford your pair of glasses and had to go without?

So…let us know! If you could not afford your glasses, what are some of the things you would miss?

That’s probably a lot safer than having folks walk around without clear vision for a day!

Stay Glassy,
Kyle

i wouldn’t be able to read the ingredients and instructions on recipes! then i wouldn’t be able to make foooood!!! tragic!

in the real sense of the question, if i could not afford glasses, i would give up gourmet coffee and desserts so i could buy them b/c they are necessary!

i’m not required to wear glasses anymore, but i sure do remember the days when i had to. i’d miss reading my emails, and text messages on my phone. i rely on that on a day to day basis. not to mention driving and seeing faces clearly.
